Goth Society and Music?
Hello All! Im new to London, although for many years I have had an affinity for the gothic aesthetic (ie, goth literature, poetry, philosophy, fashion, etc), when it comes to music, Im sorely lacking – yes, I do listen to some like Voltaire, Lacrimosa, Zombie Girl, NIN (dodges fireballs) – so I was wondering about any other bands with the same music (black cabaret, more modern rock/gothic metal, industrial)… A note I’d like to make is that even though I’d love hearing the "Gods of Goth" *thunder boom* like Siouxie and Bauhaus etc at clubs and pubs – Im not exactly the one who’s memorised each an every album….Which concerns me since many goths I’ve met seem to almost take offense to the fact that I don;t listen to them religiously…What advice do u guys have? What bands would you reccommend? (Industrial, goth metal/rock, cabaret?)
thedude….I *honestly* burst out laffing when i read ur post….research, my friend, research first – tongue wagging later. I say no more. OR AT LEAST ASK.

Well the person above me had the metal angle covered- but you specifically asked for some industrial as well, so here goes. . .
You might, if you like NIN- also like Razed in Black. This is a bit of a one man show, and the sound is pretty reminiscent of NIN, but also quite varied. It leans toward techno, but is rather on the industrial side of that. Then there’s Covenant. They’re purely idustrial, and I think, rather meditative, and great for dancing to. You’re probably already familiar with VNV Nation. If you like heavier stuff, there’s the german band Eisbrecher. If you like some stuff that’s a little more off the wall, you might check out Qntal. This is what happens when medieval scholars do synth music.
Then there’s the darkwave bands like the Cruxshadows, Bella Morte, Collide, and The Last Dance. If you like some of the older stuff, but want to see the sound updated a bit, these are a good fit for you. Then there’s faith and the Muse- who are pretty ambient most of the time but their album The Burning Season really rocks. (and they feature a former member of Christian Death.)
I don’t know what to tell you about people who will take YOUR musical preferences that much to heart. At least you recognise these bands when you hear them. That’s more than some can say. You could always say you think of these bands as good music for hanging out to, but when you’re by yourself, you prefer something newer, or that has memory attachments for you personally. There are also a lot of older bands that you might like better and you’d still not lose any bona fide points if you mention them to these people. . . Skinny Puppy (and their alter ego Delerium), the March Violets, Peter Murphy (without his accompanying bands), and Gary Numan might be places to look if you haven’t already.
ANARCHY,CHAOS,AND THE GOTH CHICKS ARE SMART THERE IS NONE OF THIS WHEN ONE ACHIEVE’S THE STATUS OF LOVE HUH!
Goths kill people. Look at Columbine. Don’t be one.
I’d reccommend starting right at the core of Goth and listen to Fields of The Nephilim and Sisters of Mercy.
If you’re looking for more recent then bands like HIM, 69 Eyes, Deathstars, Type O Negative, Godhead, Fear Factory, Slipknot, Wednesday13, Stabbing Westward, Lacuna Coil, Rammstein, Orgy, Nightwish, Evenescence, Within Temptation, Lordi, Negative and Sonata Arctica would be the best bands to listen to.
As for the idiot (thedued) above with his so called references to columbine you are deeply miseducated. I guess you’re the type that blames Marylin Manson for all the worlds wrongs.
For the most Goths are peaceful people that have introverted from the world because of your kind of peoples views. Instead of blaming something you don’t understand why don’t you ask how those kids were bought up to do what they did. The most gentle person can listen to the most violent of music but to kill there already has to be an evil mind…….
Love and PEACE
Don’t let that guy label the columbine kids–that’s just wrong. They didn’t shoot people because they were goth…Anyway, I really like Cradle of Filth. I don’t know if they are considered "gothic music"…Download "Hallowed Be Thy Name". It’s a cover of Iron Maiden’s…but Cradle does it better–WAY better.
